Walk a Mile in My Pradas [1 clip]
Reading the summary for this movie, I was expecting a movie where a gay guy switches bodies with a straight guy and they end up retaining the sexuality. Instead, what happens is they end up switching just sexualities. During the course of the movie, most of the time spent and character development is spent on Tony, who started off straight and homophobic. Suddenly Tony wants to do every stereotypical thing that gay men are supposed to want to do. The gay character, Steve, is flat as rice paper and treats his boyfriend horribly after becoming “straight” and suddenly also wants to do every stereotypically straight thing. There are so many inherent assumptions that are completely wrong that the movie tries to use in a comical way. There was a huge potential to plumb many angles from both sides that went totally unexplored. It is not so much that the movie is offensive in how ridiculously shallow the humor is, its just that it’s so shallow it is not entertaining. The only part of the movie where I was genuinely entertained was the cameo by Bruce Valench. Tony has some good moments as a straight guy that has become gay, but he can only do so much with the script, which was a total let down. |
